## Description

The Chiappa 1892 Mare's Leg in .44 Rem Magnum is a lever-action pistol modeled on the 1892 Winchester action, trimmed down to a 12-inch barrel. At 24 inches total length, it sits in an unusual category (too short to be a carbine, too long to be a conventional pistol), which is exactly the point. The color case hardened steel receiver and hand-oiled walnut grip are genuine finishes, not decorative coatings.

### Features
The lever action is the same pattern as the full-sized 1892 rifle, just in a shortened package. Cycling is smooth and consistent. The carbine ladder rear sight is adjustable for both windage and elevation, which is more versatile than a simple notch and gives the shooter real distance flexibility.

At 6.6 lbs the 12-inch version is heavier than the 9-inch model. The extra barrel length adds weight and also recovers some velocity from the .44 Magnum cartridge. The 5-round capacity is a modest step up over the shorter variant.

### Usage
Cowboy action shooting and recreational range use are the primary fits. The 12-inch barrel gives a bit more reach than the 9-inch version, and the adjustable ladder sight extends practical accuracy. Collectors drawn to Western iconography will find the finish quality worthwhile. It is not a conventional self-defense choice given the capacity and operation, but it is a legitimate .44 Magnum platform.

## What Customers Say

*AI-generated insights from customer reviews*

The Mare's Leg generates genuine enthusiasm among cowboy action shooters and Western-style collectors. The lever action is frequently praised for feeling smooth out of the box, and the color case and walnut finish get consistent positive comments on quality.

The main practical criticisms are weight and capacity. At 6.6 lbs, extended range sessions require more deliberate grip work than a traditional handgun. Five rounds is workable for competition formats where the capacity limit is expected, but it rules out most defensive applications. The .44 Magnum ammunition cost also comes up regularly. It is not a cheap-to-feed firearm.

Some shooters note that the balance feels different from a conventional handgun and takes adjustment, while others find the lever mechanism intuitive after a short break-in period. Overall, buyers who approach it as a specialized competition or collection piece tend to come away satisfied; those expecting a practical-use sidearm often don't.
