Knight Rifles was founded in 1985 by Tony Knight, a gunsmith from Lancaster, Missouri, and pioneered the in-line muzzleloader in the mid-1980s. It was originally based in Centerville, Iowa. Plastic Industries bought the company in 2011 and moved its headquarters to Athens, Tennessee, though the warranty centre stayed in Centerville. The Mountaineer was new for 2011, uses a 209 primer and comes in .50 and .52 calibre. The catalog lists a .50 calibre Mountaineer in coyote tan.
