J.P. Sauer & Sohn was founded in 1751 in Suhl and is the oldest German firearms manufacturer still operating. The company moved to Isny after SIG sold its firearms businesses to the Luke & Ortmeier group in 2000. Sauer is a separate marque from SIG Sauer, though SIG Sauer has handled its US distribution. The Sauer 100 bolt-action rifle launched in 2016 as the company's entry-level model, built in the same factory as the Mauser M18 and sharing many parts with it. It comes in Classic XT, Silver XT and Fieldshoot configurations. Sauer also makes the SL5, an inertia-driven semi-automatic 12-gauge shotgun sold in waterfowl and select walnut versions.
