Five California firearm-related bills cleared fiscal committees on August 13, moving them toward floor votes, while a sixth measure affecting licensed dealers was held in committee. The advancing group includes AB 1743, AB 1753, AB 2047, SB 948, and SB 1220. None is enacted law. The Assembly-origin bills are now moving through the Senate, and the Senate-origin bills are moving through the Assembly. AB 1810, the dealer centralized-list proposal, did not advance from the Senate Appropriations suspense file.

Three Assembly bills move in the Senate

AB 1743 passed Senate Appropriations 5-2 with amendments. The official record says it was read a second time and amended the same day, and it appears on the Senate second-reading file for August 17. The amended text would make information used by the California Department of Justice to analyze trends in recovered firearms available on request to California towns, cities, counties, state agencies, the University of California, California State University, and qualifying nonprofit private colleges, subject to conditions and formats set by the attorney general.

AB 1753 received a 5-0 do-pass vote, was read a second time, and was ordered to third reading. Its official status page places it on the Senate third-reading file for August 17. The measure is broader than a single gun-violence restraining-order change. It would expressly include ammunition in several firearm-relinquishment procedures, add protective-order notification and database duties, and authorize enforcement of qualifying extreme-risk orders issued by other jurisdictions beginning in 2028. It would also add specified misdemeanor convictions, including certain protective-order violations, to California's 10-year firearm prohibition for convictions occurring on or after January 1, 2027.
