FPC Seeks State Action on Laws Tied to Federal Firearm Registration
Firearms Policy Coalition said on October 9, 2026, that its lawyers sent letters to the attorneys general of 15 states whose laws tie the legality of suppressors or other National Firearms Act categories to federal registration. The letters ask for immediate nonenforcement guidance and a permanent legislative change. They do not themselves suspend any state law. FPC said the outreach followed both the Texas judgment and ATF guidance issued that day.
The 15-state request
FPC identified Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Wisconsin. The organization says laws in those states condition some aspect of possessing, making, or transferring suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, or other covered arms on compliance with the federal NFA process. The announcement provides representative text of the letter, rather than reporting a response from any attorney general.
The first requested step is an immediate commitment not to enforce the state provisions against possession, making, or transfer of untaxed NFA items without federal registration and approval. FPC asks each attorney general to issue a statement, opinion, or memorandum for state and local law enforcement and prosecutors. The second request is for the attorney general to work with the state legislature on a permanent change that untethers state law from federal registration requirements.
