Blackfin XL comparison documents first-round pop and lower nine-baffle ratings
PEW Science's October 21 test report on the Tuna Cans Blackfin XL documents a substantial suppression difference between its full-length and shorter configurations. On an 8-inch Q mini FIX bolt-action rifle firing subsonic 300 BLK, the 12-baffle setup earned a composite Suppression Rating of 63.7, compared with 48.7 for the nine-baffle setup. Both exhibited pronounced first-round pop, a limitation that the average scores alone do not convey.
The Blackfin XL evaluation, numbered SSS.6.241, used Discreet Ballistics 190gr Subsonic Target ammunition and a direct-thread mount. These are results for that ammunition, host and mounting arrangement, not a universal rating for every firearm accepting the suppressor. PEW Science's public waveform analysis presents a five-shot string for each configuration. GunsNation did not conduct the testing.
Length and weight versus measured suppression
With the low-profile direct-thread mount used in testing, the full configuration measured 10.6 inches and weighed 21.9 ounces. The nine-baffle configuration measured 8.8 inches and weighed 18.5 ounces. Diameter is 1.56 inches, and the mounting interface uses 1.375-24 HUB threads. PEW Science describes the nine-baffle arrangement as identical to the Blackfin L, making the comparison relevant to buyers weighing those two sizes as well as owners considering the XL's modularity.
