Springfield Armory released the 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5-inch AOS 9mm on August 18, 2026. The new PH9114AOS pairs a compact 3.5-inch slide and bull barrel with a full-length double-stack grip module, giving the pistol an 18+1 stated capacity. It is not the similarly named 3.5-inch Compact already found elsewhere in the Prodigy catalog: this model keeps the full-length grip and ships with two 18-round magazines.
Compact upper, full-size grip
The barrel is forged stainless steel with a black diamond-like carbon finish. Springfield's specification page identifies it as match grade, uses a 1:16 twist, and lists a captured guide-rod recoil system. The slide is forged carbon steel with black Cerakote. To accommodate the shorter upper, Springfield recontoured the hammer and shortened the beavertail grip safety. The resulting pistol measures 7 inches long and 5.5 inches high, with an unloaded listed weight of 29.3 ounces.
Below the slide, the frame is billet 7075-T6 aluminum with hardcoat anodizing and black Cerakote. A polymer grip module carries Springfield's Adaptive Grip Texture, which combines taller flat-topped pyramids with shorter pointed pyramids. The frame includes a Picatinny accessory rail and an ambidextrous manual safety. These details preserve the Prodigy's double-stack 1911 layout while changing the upper assembly and hammer-beavertail geometry for the 3.5-inch configuration.

It provides the announced 18-round magazine capacity in the standard model, but the pistol's 5.5-inch height remains part of the carry footprint even though the barrel and slide are shorter. Springfield markets the combination for carry and range use, but it does not publish holster compatibility or say whether holsters molded for another Prodigy length will fit the revised hammer, beavertail, slide, and rail geometry.
Springfield's catalog separately lists a 3.5-inch Compact AOS model under PH9115AOS, while this release is PH9114AOS. That one-digit distinction reinforces the need to check the complete SKU when comparing listings, because a shared barrel length does not establish the same grip configuration or magazine package.
Optics buyers have a second fit check. The supplied Docter/Noblex plate covers one footprint, and the discounted plate coupon provides a route to another AOS pattern, but the announcement does not list every optic supported by each plate. Prospective owners still need to match a specific sight to the correct AOS plate and account for screw requirements. The integral rear sight on the plate also means the sight arrangement is tied to the plate choice rather than being described as a separate fixed rear dovetail.
