Owners of the Combat Commander tend to trust Colt's fit and reliability once the pistol is broken in, describing the National Match barrel as tight and the slide-to-frame fit as consistent with other Colt-built 1911s. Some buyers note that a new Colt 1911 can feel stiff out of the box and smooths out after the first few range trips.

The Commander-length grip and shorter barrel put it between a full-size 1911 and a compact carry gun, which owners like for a balance of concealability and a full firing grip. The beavertail and ambidextrous thumb safety get praised for comfortable, repeatable operation, though shooters with smaller hands sometimes mention the grip safety needs a firm, high hold to disengage reliably.

On value, the Combat Commander sits at a premium price point among 9mm 1911s, and buyers weigh that against Colt's reputation along with the included Novak sights and G10 grips. The optic-ready slide is a common selling point for those planning to add a red dot, and aftermarket 1911 parts and holsters are plentiful given the platform's long history.
