Full-bore 4570 ammo is not pleasant to shoot from the bench but tell you what we're going to do it anyway because it's just so much fun.
These Buckhorn sights don't really lend themselves to target shooting they do acquire quite quickly you can really get behind them and just pick them up quick.
Testing out the trigger on this thing breaks it a nice clean four pounds with the trigger pull gauge definitely got a good trigger.
Customers Say
AI-generated insights derived from customer reviews and discussions on popular gun-enthusiast forums.
The Henry Side Gate .45-70 gets strong praise on build quality and craftsmanship. The walnut and blued steel are consistently described as well-fitted and attractive. The lever action is smooth, which matters when working the action under hunting pressure.
The .45-70 caliber performance is a major discussion point. Owners hunting large game report it works well within reasonable woods-hunting distances. Recoil management comes up often - the cartridge is punchy at full power, and some shooters share strategies around load selection for more comfortable practice. Standard-pressure .45-70 loads are much milder than modern high-pressure loads in this rifle.
The side gate loading draws favorable comparisons to traditional Henry designs that required full tube removal. Weight at 7.08 lbs. is occasionally mentioned as notable for a 4-round rifle, though the caliber demands a substantial platform. Overall sentiment is positive with the rifle considered good value for the craftsmanship and caliber.

Powerful is the first word that comes to mind, but the lasting impression is just how much fun this Henry is to shoot. It has the sort of presence that gets noticed immediately. When I fired it, people nearby came over to find out what was making that unmistakable report. That attention became part of the enjoyment rather than a distraction. Few rifles I have used turn an ordinary shooting session into such a social moment, and this one certainly did.
