The IWI Tavor SAR in 9mm Luger is a semi-automatic bullpup rifle with a 17" barrel and 26.125" overall length. Chambering it in 9mm rather than 5.56mm changes the character considerably: softer recoil, pistol-caliber ballistics, and compatibility with 9mm handgun magazines in some configurations.

Detailed Features

The bullpup layout keeps overall length at 26.125" while retaining a 17" barrel. The chrome-lined cold hammer-forged steel barrel handles sustained 9mm fire without significant throat wear. At 7.9 lbs unloaded, this is slightly lighter than the 5.56mm variants.

The receiver is polymer, the grip is black polymer, and controls are ambidextrous. No iron sights are included. The flat-top rail is optics-ready for whatever sighting system you prefer. The 32-round standard capacity gives a useful round count for range sessions. Manual safety is standard.

Target Audience

This rifle suits shooters who want a compact, optics-ready bullpup in a pistol caliber, whether for range use, competition, or home defense where 9mm recoil and noise are preferable to a rifle caliber. The 32-round capacity and comfortable handling make it easy to shoot for extended periods.

Usage Scenarios

At the range the 9mm chambering is forgiving and the 32-round magazine keeps reloads infrequent. For home defense the 26.125" total length handles interior spaces well, and 9mm is a practical choice for overpenetration concerns. Competitive shooters using pistol-caliber carbine divisions will find the compact bullpup format an interesting platform.

The IWI Tavor SAR in 9mm draws a consistent pattern of feedback from owners.

The bullpup design's compactness is the top talking point, short overall length with a full 17" barrel, which owners appreciate for maneuverability. Ergonomics rate well; the grip and weight distribution make it comfortable to handle in extended sessions. Reliability comes up often as a positive, with reports of consistent function across various 9mm loads and conditions. The optics-ready platform is well-received by owners who prefer running a red dot or other optic rather than factory irons.

On the critical side: at 7.9 lbs, a few users find it heavier than comparable pistol-caliber carbines. Trigger feel is a split issue, acceptable for most uses, but some shooters find it lacking compared to what they'd want for precision work. Price is consistently noted as a consideration; most owners feel it's warranted, but it sits at the higher end of the pistol-caliber carbine market. Aftermarket parts specifically designed for the Tavor SAR in 9mm are less plentiful than for more mainstream platforms, which frustrates some owners who want to customize.
