Owners of the 990 Aftershock line generally trust Mossberg's gas system to keep cycling light and heavy 12 gauge loads without much fuss, and the shorter action tends to hold up well under repeated range sessions. A few users note the felt recoil is sharper than a full-stock shotgun given the compact size and lighter weight, though the AfterShock grip is usually credited with taking some of the sting out of it.

Handling opinions split along expected lines. Shooters who want a short, quick-swinging platform for home defense or a truck gun like how little space it takes up and how fast it comes on target. Others find the pistol-grip-only stance takes practice to shoot accurately, and the shorter sight radius makes the RMSc-pattern optic mount a popular first upgrade rather than an afterthought.

On value, the 990 Aftershock is usually seen as an affordable way into the compact tactical shotgun category next to pricier competitors. The M-LOK forend and optic-ready cut are appreciated for accepting common accessories without gunsmithing, and aftermarket support for lights, slings, and optic plates continues to grow around this platform.
