The Mossberg Patriot line has a reputation among owners as an affordable, dependable hunting rifle rather than a precision target gun, and the 400 Legend chambering fits that role well for hunters wanting a straight-wall cartridge option. The LBA adjustable trigger is a commonly cited highlight, with many owners saying it breaks noticeably better than they expected for the price.

Handling gets generally positive marks: the synthetic stock keeps the rifle light for carrying through the field, though a few owners describe the factory stock as feeling a bit plasticky compared to higher-end synthetics. The threaded barrel is popular among owners who want to add a muzzle brake for recoil management or a suppressor.

On value, the Patriot is frequently mentioned as one of the more affordable ways into a threaded, straight-wall bolt rifle, and Mossberg's parts and warranty support get positive mentions. Aftermarket stocks and triggers for the Patriot platform are reasonably available for owners who want to upgrade later.
