Detailed Features

The .17 HMR cartridge is a high-velocity rimfire, faster and flatter-shooting than .22 WMR at the cost of more wind sensitivity. Savage's delayed blowback system was specifically engineered for the .17 HMR cartridge, which develops more pressure than typical rimfire rounds and needs a controlled cycling mechanism to function reliably.

The AccuTrigger is adjustable within the 1.5 to 6 lb range, which lets the shooter dial in a pull appropriate for their skill level or the use case. The heavy 22-inch barrel adds stability and reduces the harmonics that affect accuracy during sustained fire. At 5.4 lbs the rifle is light enough to carry without fatigue.

The synthetic stock has a textured grip for positive handling in various conditions.

Usage Scenarios

Small game hunting (prairie dogs, squirrels, rabbits) at extended rimfire ranges is the primary application. The .17 HMR's flat trajectory extends effective reach compared to .22 LR or .22 WMR. Target shooting and accuracy practice benefit from the heavy barrel and adjustable AccuTrigger combination.

The Savage A-17 draws consistent praise for accuracy. The combination of the delayed blowback action designed specifically for .17 HMR and the AccuTrigger gives it a reputation for tight groups at distances where other rimfire semi-autos lose precision.

The adjustable AccuTrigger is well-regarded. Owners appreciate being able to set a lighter pull for precision work. The semi-auto action allows faster follow-up shots on small game compared to bolt-action alternatives.

The main recurring issue in discussions involves feeding sensitivity: certain ammunition brands cycle more reliably than others, and owners typically need to experiment to find what works best in their specific rifle. Magazine function is mentioned occasionally as an area that can be finicky. Overall sentiment is positive, with the gun held in high regard for accuracy and the .17 HMR caliber's performance at range.

My wife has really taken to this A-17, and its accuracy is the reason. She has made 165-yard shots right on target with it, which left a strong impression on both of us. Calling it a tack driver fits our experience. The rifle has been accurate enough that her 22 now spends more time in the safe. What I appreciate most is that the performance is not just a first impression based on appearance or handling. We have watched it hit at 165 yards, and she continues to love it for exactly that capability. For us, the rifle's defining quality is straightforward, repeatable accuracy at a distance that genuinely impressed us.

Accurate shots at 165 yd are the standout here. That kind of performance makes this little rifle particularly appealing.
