Detailed Features

The delayed-blowback action is designed to let chamber pressure drop before the bolt cycles, which matters with the higher-pressure .17 WSM rimfire cartridge. The bolt is hard chrome with an oversized handle for positive manipulation. The receiver is case-hardened. Savage's AccuTrigger is user-adjustable for pull weight without requiring a gunsmith. The gray laminate stock is stable across humidity and temperature changes compared to plain wood.

Usage

The .17 WSM pushes a light bullet at high velocity with a flat trajectory, which works well for varmint and small-game hunting at distances where .17 HMR starts to drop off. Recoil is light. The adjustable trigger helps with precise shot placement. Getting the rifle zeroed takes some scope work upfront, and .17 WSM ammunition is less widely stocked than .22 LR or .17 HMR, so building up a supply before a trip is worth considering.

The Savage A17 WSM Sporter draws consistent praise for accuracy. Varmint hunters in particular like what the .17 WSM cartridge does at distance: the flat trajectory and high velocity make it effective on small targets, and the AccuTrigger's adjustability helps shooters get consistent results.

Build quality is generally well-regarded. Owners mention solid fit and finish and find the action smooth to operate.

The main friction points are ammunition-related. .17 WSM is less available than common rimfire calibers, and per-round cost is higher. Some shooters note that getting the rifle dialed in with scope mounting and zeroing takes a session or two. There are occasional comments on whether the price is justified versus alternatives in the same bracket, though most who shoot it regularly consider it worthwhile.

Overall, it has a good reputation among varmint hunters who are comfortable sourcing the ammunition.

I love this rifle enough to consider getting another one.
