The Savage Model 12 Benchrest is a single-shot bolt-action rifle built specifically for precision competition. Chambered in 6.5x284 Norma, it's a cartridge choice that benchrest shooters favor for its combination of long-range ballistics and barrel life. The 29-inch stainless barrel and 12.8-lb weight are purposeful. This rifle is designed to sit still on a rest, not to be packed into the field.

Detailed Features

The 29-inch stainless barrel at 1:12 twist is tuned for the 6.5x284's typical bullet weights. The heavy profile minimizes barrel movement and aids heat dissipation during extended sessions. No iron sights are included; the receiver is drilled and tapped for scope mounting. The three-position safety allows the action to be cycled with the safety engaged. The wood laminate stock in satin gray is dimensioned for bench use.

Owners who shoot benchrest competitions consistently rate this rifle well for accuracy and the smoothness of its bolt. The adjustable stock fit and the ergonomic design for stationary shooting get positive mentions. Load development for 6.5x284 is a common discussion thread. The cartridge rewards careful reloading and shooters share notes on powder charges and bullet seating depth.

The main practical criticisms are weight and cost. At 12.8 lbs it's not a hunting rifle, and anyone who expected otherwise will be disappointed. Ongoing ammunition and brass costs for 6.5x284 are higher than common calibers, which some buyers note after the initial purchase.
