Detailed Features
Double/single action operation allows fast shots from double action or precise single-action fire. Both have their place depending on the situation. The adjustable white outline rear sight and red ramp front sight work well across lighting conditions and can be tuned for different loads.
The six-round cylinder manages recoil adequately across both .38 SPL +P and full-power .357 Magnum. The medium frame fits most hand sizes with the Hogue rubber grip reducing felt recoil. The stainless steel barrel and cylinder resist corrosion and wear over long service periods.

What Reviewers Say
Quoted verbatim from YouTube reviews. Each link opens the video at the moment quoted.
Ones I have on it but it a really nice looking gun uh you know Smith and Wesson revolver uh has trouble being ugly.
Smith wesson does have in my opinion the best action as far as any revolver goes.
There's something about a double action or a single action revolver that is just satisfying one of the big things about it is that it's very simple.
You could say distasteful uh features characteristics that some people really don't like you know the key lock you've got the frame mount firing pin you know the firing pin is not on the hammer anymore on the Smiths.
Don't know they don't really detract all that much I I can live with it if it's a really nice package otherwise.
Customers Say
AI-generated insights derived from customer reviews and discussions on popular gun-enthusiast forums.
The Smith & Wesson 686 Combat Magnum .357/.38 Special in satin finish draws broad appreciation from owners, and the feedback is grounded.
Build quality and dependable performance come up consistently. The satin finish is liked for its appearance and moderate wear resistance. Trigger pull is commonly described as smooth with a clean reset, which benefits accuracy in both action modes. The adjustable sights are noted for their precision contribution.
The revolver's compatibility with both .38 SPL +P and .357 Magnum gives it real flexibility: lighter loads for practice, heavier rounds for defense or hunting.
Weight is the most-cited limitation. The 686 is a heavy gun at 44 oz., which some users find tiring during long carry periods. Some shooters prefer semi-automatics for their higher capacity and faster reloads, which is a fair trade-off comparison for the platform. Overall the 686 Combat Magnum is consistently regarded as a capable and versatile revolver.
