Owners of the Smith & Wesson Model 36 Field Ethos Tropical appreciate the blued finish and the compact proportions the short barrel provides. The Tropical designation draws attention from collectors, and most buyers come in with clear expectations for what the Model 36 platform delivers.

The 5-shot cylinder and .38 Special chambering are well-understood characteristics of this class. The double-action trigger pull on a short-barreled revolver takes practice to manage accurately, and some owners prefer using single-action mode at the range to tighten groups.

The blued finish demands more maintenance than stainless, which some owners see as part of the ownership experience and others find tedious. Value opinions split accordingly: collectors tend to find it worth the price, while buyers focused purely on utility sometimes question the premium over plainer alternatives.
