The barrel is hammer-forged steel with a black Melonite finish, which handles corrosion well. Sights are front white-dot dovetail and rear two-dot. The polymer frame is textured for grip, and the three passive safeties (grip, trigger, and firing pin) are all internal, so there's no manual safety to manipulate under stress. The double-action mechanism keeps the trigger pull consistent shot to shot.

The XD-M Compact in 9mm gets generally positive feedback. Owners appreciate the compact size for both concealed carry and home defense, and the grip ergonomics come up often as a reason for good accuracy and control.

Reliability is a recurring point. The pistol feeds reliably across different ammunition types, which matters for owners who want to stock more than one load.

The adjustable sights are a frequently mentioned plus, letting shooters dial in their zero without aftermarket work.

The main complaints are weight and trigger feel. At 28 oz the XD-M Compact is on the heavier side for all-day carry compared to lighter polymer competitors. A handful of owners find the trigger pull acceptable but prefer something lighter or crisper.

Overall, owners who prioritize reliability and capacity over minimum weight tend to be satisfied with the XD-M Compact.
