Hammer-fired 9mm pistols use an external or internal hammer to strike the firing pin, rather than the striker-fired mechanism found in many modern designs. This allows for both DA/SA and single-action-only trigger configurations. The DA/SA option gives a longer, heavier first pull from the uncocked position and a shorter, lighter pull for subsequent shots. Many models include a decocking lever for safely lowering the hammer.
