Owners of the 1866 Yellowboy line generally like how smoothly the action runs once it has a few hundred rounds through it to wear in, though a handful mention the lever needs some working loose out of the box. Fit of the walnut stock to the receiver draws praise for a rifle in this price range.

As a Trapper-length carbine, the shorter barrel makes it easy to carry and maneuver, which cowboy action shooters and plinkers both mention as the draw. The .45 Colt chambering is a favorite for its mild recoil and wide ammunition selection, including cowboy-load options.

The common complaint is that the front sight takes some squinting for precise work at distance, typical of a rifle built around traditional iron sights rather than optics. Aftermarket parts and gunsmith support for the 1866 pattern are well established, so owners looking to tune the action or swap sights have plenty of options.
