Use Cases

The 648's 6-inch barrel and adjustable sights make it a natural fit for target shooting at the range. The sight radius helps and the weight keeps muzzle movement minimal. Small game hunters get 8 rounds of .22 WMR in a reliable revolver platform. The caliber's controllable recoil also makes it workable for newer shooters developing fundamentals.

The S&W 648 draws consistently positive reviews, with accuracy and the 8-round capacity mentioned most often as standout features.

Accuracy gets the most attention from reviewers. The 6-inch barrel and adjustable rear sight give it a meaningful edge over shorter-barreled revolvers for target work and small game. Build quality earns steady praise; the stainless construction is seen as durable and well-finished. The 8-round cylinder is frequently called out as an advantage over other .22 revolvers that top out at 6 or 7 rounds. Recoil with .22 WMR is described as very manageable, making the revolver accessible to a wide range of shooters.

Versatility comes up often. Owners use it for plinking, pest control, and small game, and most find it handles each application well. The design draws positive remarks from those who appreciate S&W's fit and finish.

The main points of friction are ammunition availability, .22 WMR can be harder to find and more expensive than .22 LR, and price, which sits above comparable .22 options. A segment of buyers debate whether the premium over a standard .22 LR revolver is worth it for the WMR chambering.
