The Taylor's & Company 1873 Cattleman Revolving Rifle pairs a single-action revolver mechanism with an 18" rifle barrel, chambered in .44-40 Win. At 4.4 lbs it's one of the lighter rifles in this class, which makes it easy to handle during extended range sessions or cowboy action shooting matches.
The blued steel receiver and walnut stock give the Cattleman its period-correct appearance. Fixed blade front and notch rear sights are simple and quick to acquire, appropriate for the cowboy action shooting format where speed matters. The 1-in-36" twist rate is designed around the .44-40 projectile. Six-round capacity is standard for revolving rifles of this pattern.
Cowboy action shooting is where this rifle sees most of its use, and it fits that role well: light, fast-handling, and chambered in a caliber that pairs with many single-action revolvers for a matched set. It also works for recreational range shooting and as a collector piece given its historical design. Hunting use is possible for small game at close range, though .44-40 ammunition options are more limited than modern calibers.
Owners of the Taylor's 1873 Cattleman .44-40 Revolving Rifle tend to appreciate the historical design and the quality of the blued finish and walnut stock. Build quality comes up often in a positive way. The rifle feels solid and the fit and finish are generally well regarded for the price.
Shooting experience is usually described as enjoyable: the .44-40 has manageable recoil and the rifle is accurate enough for its intended uses. Cowboy action shooters in particular like having a revolving rifle that matches their single-action pistols in caliber.
On the critical side, some users find the rifle heavier than expected for a gun under 4.5 lbs. Though that likely reflects expectations set by modern synthetic-stocked rifles. .44-40 ammunition availability is a recurring concern, especially outside major metropolitan areas. Maintenance of the mechanism requires more attention than a simple lever-action, which catches some buyers off guard. Price is mentioned occasionally as on the high end, though most feel the craftsmanship justifies it.
