The Rough Rider Rancher pulls in shooters who already like Heritage's revolvers and want a rifle that matches the same Old West styling. Owners generally say the fit and finish is solid for the price, though a few note the action needs some working-in before it runs smoothly.

As a plinker, the light weight from the aluminum receiver makes it easy to carry all day, and the walnut stock is a common highlight over the plastic stocks found on many budget .22 rifles at this price. The fixed sights work fine for casual shooting, but a handful of owners add an optic mount for more precise aiming.

Value is where the Rancher gets the most praise. It is often bought as a companion piece to a Rough Rider revolver in the same caliber, and owners like being able to run one type of ammunition through both guns. The recurring complaint is that aftermarket parts are harder to find than for more mainstream .22 rifles.
