The Winchester 1892 Deluxe Trapper Takedown is a lever-action rifle chambered in .357 Mag, also compatible with .38 Special. The 16-inch barrel keeps it short enough to handle in close quarters without giving up much velocity compared to a full-length lever gun.

Detailed Features

The takedown design splits the rifle into two sections for transport and storage, no tools required. The octagonal barrel is a traditional touch that also shifts balance slightly forward and adds visual appeal. Sights are Marbles Arms Gold Bead front and Semi Buckhorn rear, a pairing that works well for the distances most .357 Mag shooters engage. A top tang safety is included for safe carry. Finish on the receiver is color case hardened, which gives each rifle a slightly unique appearance.

Usage Scenarios

At 5 lbs it is light enough for a day in the field hunting small-to-medium game. The takedown feature makes it a natural fit for pack hunters or anyone who needs the rifle to fit in a compact case. The .357 Mag/.38 Special dual compatibility is useful if you already carry a revolver in the same caliber. One ammunition supply covers both firearms.

Owners of the 1892 Deluxe Trapper Takedown tend to be enthusiastic about it. The combination of case hardened finish, walnut stock, and octagonal barrel reads as a genuinely attractive rifle, not just a functional one. For collectors and shooters who care about how a firearm looks, that matters.

The lever action itself gets consistent praise. The cycling is smooth, the .357 Magnum cartridge is versatile, and the dual .38 Special compatibility adds flexibility at the range. Accuracy with both cartridges is reported as good at practical distances.

The takedown feature is well-regarded by hunters and travelers who need to pack the rifle down. Disassembly is straightforward and reassembly holds zero reliably according to most owners.

The main criticism is weight relative to expectations for a 16-inch trapper-style rifle. At 5 lbs it is not heavy, but some find it slightly heavier than comparable modern lever guns. A few buyers also wish for more modern sight options, though the Marbles Arms setup works fine for most uses.
