Assault shotguns are high-capacity, magazine-fed shotguns built for rapid fire in close-quarters roles. Most are 12-gauge. Detachable box or drum magazines replace the tube feed found on conventional shotguns, enabling faster reloads and higher round counts. Common models include the Saiga-12 and Kalashnikov KS-12, both derived from the AK platform, and the Mossberg 590M with its detachable magazine system. Operating mechanisms are semi-automatic or pump-action; some select-fire variants exist. Picatinny rails, adjustable stocks, ergonomic grips, and muzzle brakes are typical features.
