The Chiappa Rhino Nebula 60DS is a .357 Magnum revolver with a double/single action trigger and Chiappa's signature bottom-cylinder firing mechanism. The barrel aligns with the lowest chamber in the cylinder, lowering the bore axis compared to conventional top-firing revolvers and reducing muzzle rise during shooting.

Detailed Features

The bottom-cylinder design is the Rhino's most significant engineering departure from standard revolvers. With the bore axis lower relative to the hand, recoil impulse pushes back more directly rather than rotating the muzzle up, translating to faster reacquisition between shots in .357 Mag, which is a caliber with enough recoil to make this meaningful.

The single/double action mechanism gives two operating modes: double-action for a longer pull that cocks and fires in one motion, or single-action with the hammer cocked for a lighter, shorter pull. Adjustable fiber optic sights handle both bright and low-light conditions and can be tuned to the shooter's preference. At 2.1 lbs and 10.5 inches overall, it's listed as concealed-carry friendly, though a 6-inch barrel revolver is better suited to competition or home defense than everyday carry for most people. The Nebula Mix Color finish makes it visually distinctive.

Target Audience

Competition shooters wanting reduced muzzle flip in .357 Mag, collectors drawn to unconventional designs, and home defense buyers who want a full-size revolver with modern sights will all find something to like here. The double/single action trigger covers more use cases than a single-action-only revolver.

Usage Scenarios

At the range or in competition, the lower bore axis is a genuine advantage. Muzzle control between shots is better than most same-caliber revolvers. The .357 Mag chamber also accepts .38 Special, which is useful for practice rounds. For home defense, the 6-round capacity and adjustable fiber optic sights are practical. The Nebula finish works as a display piece in a collection as well.

The Chiappa Rhino Nebula 60DS gets a fairly consistent reaction from shooters who've spent time with it: the bottom-barrel design actually delivers on its promise, and the finish generates strong opinions either way.

The low bore axis is the most praised feature among people who've compared it back-to-back against standard revolvers in .357 Mag. Muzzle rise is noticeably reduced, and recoil feels more manageable, particularly for shooters with smaller hands who find conventional revolvers harder to control. This mechanical advantage earns genuine respect from the competition-oriented crowd.

The Nebula finish draws consistent attention at the range. It's a polarizing look. Some users love how distinctive it is, others find it too flashy. Either way it stands out, which seems to be the point.

Build quality feedback is split. Some owners report a solid, well-assembled gun that holds up through sustained use; a subset of buyers have encountered concerns about component fit or consistency across production batches. Ergonomics are similarly divided. The grip works well for many shooters but the geometry feels unfamiliar to anyone who's only shot traditional revolvers, and adaptation takes time.

Price is a recurring discussion point. The Rhino sits at a premium compared to more conventional revolvers with similar caliber capabilities, and whether the bottom-barrel design and unique finish justify the cost depends on how much those specific features matter to the individual buyer. For shooters who want the reduced muzzle flip and are drawn to the look, the price is defensible. For those who just want a reliable .357 revolver, there are cheaper ways to get there.
