Varmint rifles are the models a maker labels Varmint, Varminter or Varmintmaster: Savage's Model 12 and 25 Varminters, the Remington 700 Varmint SF and SPS Varmint, Tikka's T3x Varmint and Super Varmint, CZ's 457 and 527 Varmint, Howa's Varminter, the Sako 85 and 90 Varmint, the CVA Cascade Varmint Hunter, APF's Varmint AR rifles and others. What the label usually adds is a heavier, often longer barrel, a stock with a wide flat forend for shooting off a rest, and a better trigger, which together make a rifle that holds its zero through a long string of shots from a bipod or bench. The chamberings run from .22 LR and .17 HMR rimfires through the classic fast .22 centerfires (.223 Remington, .22-250, .204 Ruger, .220 Swift) to .243 and 6mm Creedmoor. Several makers also put the Varmint label on .308 Winchester and 6.5 Creedmoor rifles, where it describes the heavy-barrel configuration rather than a varmint cartridge.
