The Savage 25 Lightweight Varmint is a bolt-action rifle chambered in .204 Ruger with a 24-inch medium contour button-rifled barrel, brown laminate wood stock, and blued finish. At approximately 8.3 lbs it sits on the heavier side for a varmint rifle, but that weight helps with stability in bench or prone positions.

Use Cases

The .204 Ruger is a fast, flat-shooting cartridge that works well on prairie dogs, coyotes, and similar-sized varmints at ranges where precision matters. The free-floating barrel and AccuTrigger address two of the main accuracy variables; the 24-inch barrel maximizes the cartridge's velocity potential. The rifle also works in bench-rest target competitions where consistent performance is the measure.

The Savage 25 Varmint Precision in .204 Ruger gets consistently positive reviews from dedicated varmint hunters and precision target shooters.

Accuracy is the top positive. Reviewers report tight groups out of the box at varied distances, which is the main criterion for this category of rifle. Build quality earns consistent praise, with owners describing the construction as solid and durable. The .204 Ruger caliber receives specific positive mentions for its flat trajectory and minimal recoil, which makes it practical for extended shooting sessions on prairie dog towns or similar field applications.

The AccuTrigger is frequently highlighted as a genuine feature advantage, giving shooters direct control over pull weight. Customization potential draws attention from owners interested in stock upgrades or other aftermarket work; the 1911 platform has a well-established support ecosystem.

Weight comes up as the main criticism. At 8.3 lbs the rifle is not a natural pack gun, and some users note it's on the heavy end even for bench work compared to lighter alternatives. Stock aesthetics draw a small amount of comment from those who prefer a different look. Value relative to price is generally rated as strong for the performance delivered.
